Two of New England’s most popular apples — the MacIntosh and the Cortland — are ready in September. In October, it’s time for the Red Delicious, Empire, Macoun, Red Northern Spy, Golden Delicious, Hampshire, Northern Spy and Baldwin varieties.

Bring a bag (or two) and pick your own apples at King Blossom Farm in Grantham. King Blossom offers MacIntosh, Cortland, Jonathan, Antique Red Delicious, Summer Rambo, Winter Banana and Cox Orange Pippin apples. The Figleys purchased the property — which included an 80-year-old neglected apple orchard, various other fruit trees and a large raspberry planting — in 1983. “We knew little about managing apples, pears, cherries and plums, but soon found the help and advice we needed,” Jeff Figley says. Grantham families have been enjoying the orchard ever since.

Highland Lake Apple Farm in East Andover kicks off their apple season with AppleFest, an open house held on the last weekend in September (this year Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can pick your own apples — Peter Zak has an acre of apple trees, including MacIntosh, Freedoms, Baldwins, Golden and Red Delicious, Liberty, Cortland, to name a few — or pick up a bag at his farm stand. The farm has been in operation for almost 20 years; Zak started the orchard from scratch in 1988 and has been selling apples since 1992. (He also makes wonderful jams and jellies.)

If you prefer local apples but don’t have the time to pick your own, Cutting Farm in West Springfield has fresh from the orchard apples in 10 varieties, including Macoun, MacIntosh, Sweet Sixteens, Granny Smiths, Red Delicious and Cortland. Susan and Keith Cutting offer their apples at several farmers’ markets in the area, including Wilmot, Newbury and Lebanon.
